BLAXPLOITATION
The Blaxploitation era was a film movement in the 1970s that featured Black actors, broke stereotypes, and redefined the perception of Foundational Black American actresses. The movement was a response to racist misrepresentations of Black people in American movies, and was facilitated by Hollywood's permissive film rating system in 1968. Blaxploitation films established a cinematic voice for a community and a generation that had been underrepresented in mainstream cinema.
